Elbows Up!
March 2025 – Ted & Michele
7.0 Osoyoos Larose 2020 $61
Wine of the night by a hair. Inky red-purple. Nose very closed at first, but opens with time to show red and black fruits. Tannic, with peppercorn, hint of cumin, and red/black fruits. Consensus: “too pricey”!
7.0 Mission Hill Reserve Merlot 2021 $33
Deep red. Green olive, smoked meat and maybe a hint of grapefruit on the nose. Peppery, with bright red and black fruits and green olive again. Nice wine!
6.5 Blasted Church Cabernet Franc 2021 $32
Garnet. Obvious green pepper on the nose, with caramelized sugar in the background. Fairly light bodied, some sweetness and chocolate notes.
6.5 Stratus Red 2021 $55
Red-garnet. Notes of grapefruit and cherry cough drops on the nose. Also grapefruit on the palate, with some black tea. Easy drinking. Nice acidity. Some thought it was a bit flat, but generally well liked. QPR not great.
3.5 Henry of Pelham Speck Family Reserve Baco Noir 2023 $28
Dark purple. Caramel on the nose, maybe diet coke? Tastes like chocolate mint, maybe with a hint of turmeric. “Yuck” was a common reaction…
2.0 Sandbanks Reserve Noir Squared $20
Light garnet. Nose of cherry-coke with a hint of menthol. On the palate, sickly-sweet like cream soda, only not as good. In a word, awful.
Italian Whites
April 1st 2025 – Hosted by Don at Louise & Neil’s
8.0 Vulcanico Falanghina 2022 $20
Deep yellow. A hint of rubber or petrol on the nose, with oranges and pear. Some pleasant bitterness on the palate, with floral notes and more pear. Neil: “Me likey!”
7.5 Tiefenbrunner Pinot Grigio 2023 $21
Pale yellow-green. Lemon and stoney minerality on the nose. A hint of almond. Some citrus and tropical fruit on the palate. Richer than the nose would suggest. Smooth.
7.5 Attems Pinot Grigio Friuli 2023 $20
Pale yellow. Tropical fruit, black tea on the nose. Citrusy fruit, with hints of black tea on the palate.
7.5 Velenosi Pecorino 2023 $18
Very pale yellow-green. Definitely some oily petrol on the nose, but pleasant. Kind of like Riesling. Canned peach and pear on the palate, but not super sweet.
7.0 Collavini Friulano 2022 $17
Pale yellow. Herbal and mineral on the nose, with a hint of burnt sugar. A bit bland, but enjoyable. Some spice notes.
7.0 Surani Fiano Puglia 2023 $19
Light yellow. Faint pear and apple on the nose, with floral notes. A bit bland too, but also enjoyable.
0.0 April Fools Special 2025 $Priceless
Light yellow. Intense cardamom, ginger, and apple cider vinegar on the nose. Very acidic palate, some might say vinegary, but also reminiscent of drinking flat ginger ale after throwing up!
